Grillin’ Time – Green Mountain Pellet Grill

The Green Mountain Grills are absolutely fabulous. I have been cooking on these grills going on 4 years this April. I have seen these units go from basic small pellet grills/smokers with only Smoke/Med/High settings to the new units that have digital controls from 150°f to 500°f. Standard now is a meat probe that reads on the control panel the internal meat temperature without having to open your grill lid. Some other great standard features are the textured paint finish, all urethane green wheels, casters, low pellet alarm and fan only setting to blow the pellets out of the burn pot when you have completed your cooking. The grills come in two sizes –

The Daniel Boone with 27X16 (432 sq. in.) stainless steel grate, and 13.5” clearance inside weighing 152 pounds and the Jim Bowie with stainless steel grate measures 37.5” X 16” (600 sq. in.) and the inside clearance is 13.5”. It weighs 183 pounds.

Both grills have optional Stainless Steel Lids and Remote Control available. The peaked lid is unique to GMG and allows the cooking of Beer Can Chickens and Turkeys without the birds touching the lid.

As for the cooking – what can I say YUMMMMM! I have cooked everything from your standard baby backs, brisket, burgers, steaks and even PIE. The choices are endless and each one comes out perfect. Just the right amount of smoke and the best smoke ring. The recipes on the GMG site by Mountain Man Steve are all designed to be cooked on the GMG. It is great when people love a product, photos of great looking food cooked on the GMG are posted on Facebook pages and pellet grilling forums across the USA. The ease of cooking really good smoked food on the GMG is surprising, until you’ve done it you just don’t know. I do tastings regularly and once you eat the food you are hooked.

The grills have a burn pot like a pellet heating appliance, but unlike a pellet stove the burn pot has a flash shield over the pot and a drip tray below the cooking grates. This setup protects your food and you practically can’t burn your food. The fan puts just the right amount of smoke into the grill and with a convection principle your food gets cooked.

This is a good middle of the road pellet packed in a beautiful BMT brand burlap bag instead of a commodity grade synthetic bag.  BMT is looking to you, the consumer, to work with their selected dealers to recycle these bags. Simply put the bags aside until you purchase the next ton or pick up a few single bags at your retailer and return the bags. There is a large variety of Wood Pellets available this year in Ct. Some Good, Some Not. Wood pellets come in varying quality for a number of different reasons. The main component of quality stems from the fiber source used in the manufacturing process. The best quality wood pellets come from pellet mills that can control the fiber. Those that make hardwood flooring or mill Framing lumber such as 2 X 4 ‘s have been the most consistent as far as the best pellets. These pellets are consistently good or great year after year and and provide great heat and low ash. Some of the best brands that meet this quality are Somerset , Cubex, Turman, Anderson,Okanagan , Dragon Mountain. There are others but these are the more well known in the Connecticut area.

A gentleman right here in CT spent quite amount of time this past winter compiling testing of at least 40 brands of pellets that at some time during the year were sold in the state. His name is Jay Takeman and his results can be found at this link http://www.hearth.com/ and also http://www.hearth.com/.  
After reading this exhaustive study you come to the conclusion that there is a tremendous difference in pellet quality. This results in different heat output, ash content and cleaning of your pellet appliance.

As for the price of wood pellets they vary almost as much as the quality of the pellet themselves. The only drawback is some pellets with high prices are not necessarily the best quality. Many pellet brands are priced within a few dollars of each other per ton or bag. Your job as a consumer is to educate yourself and purchase the best quality wood pellet you can find at the same price or perhaps less than those of lesser quality. Do your research and purchase from a retailer that stands behind the product, is knowledgeable about the differences in quality and is going to sell your products that he/she would not be ashamed to burn in there own pellet burning appliance.

Eden Wood Pellet Review

I just completed burning 3 bags of the Edens in the Enviro M55 Cast on setting 2.  Good heat, relatively low ash ( kind of grainy ) the glass is a little stained but not bad. My overall impression is much better than I had anticipated with this pellet. Mennilly’s Wood Pellets was right about the dust – poor slowly. The funny thing about this pellet is it is so dense the pallets look like they are short a row and the bags seem a little empty. They weigh 40 lbs..  I am not sure if they will last as long as a less dense pellet because every turn of the auger will feed in a certain amount of pellets – with less actual pellets will a bag last as long. hmmm. This is a new wood pellet manufactured in Chesapeake, Virginia.  Test done over three days in October at Long Pond Hot Tub | Fireplace | Fence in the Plainfield, Ct village of Wauregan.
